How We Rank Hotels

Choosing a hotel is rarely about one number.

A hotel may have an excellent location but fall short in other areas. Another may have strong online ratings but not be the best choice for every traveller.

That is why we use a ranking system that combines three different parts of the hotel experience.

Every hotel can receive a total score of up to 100%.

55% — Fixed Hotel Criteria

The largest part of our score comes from a set of fixed criteria.

These criteria allow us to evaluate hotels using a consistent structure and compare different properties more fairly.

The fixed criteria consider important aspects of the hotel, including:

Location

Room quality and comfort

Service

Cleanliness

Facilities

Design and condition

Food and breakfast, where relevant

Value within its category

Consistency of the overall experience

Together, these fixed criteria account for 55% of the final score.

Using the same core criteria across our hotel selections helps keep the ranking process consistent

25% — Online Guest Feedback

Online guest feedback accounts for 25% of the final score.

We consider publicly available ratings and guest feedback from established hotel booking and travel platforms.

Rather than relying on one individual review, we look at the broader picture, including overall ratings, recent feedback and recurring comments from guests.

Because online ratings and reviews change over time, this part of a hotel's score may also change.

20% — Our Evaluation

The remaining 20% comes from our own evaluation.

This part allows us to consider what we see and experience when reviewing hotels and details that may not be fully reflected by fixed criteria or online ratings alone.

As Best Hotels in City continues to grow, our own hotel reviews and evaluations will become an increasingly important part of keeping our recommendations useful and current.

Our evaluation accounts for 20% of the final score.

The Final Score

The final score gives us a consistent way to compare hotels, but we do not believe travellers should choose a hotel based on a number alone.

That is why we also explain why each hotel was selected and what type of traveller it may suit best.

Rankings Can Change

Hotels change, and so do guest experiences.

Properties are renovated, services change, new reviews are published and new hotels open.

Our own evaluations may also be updated over time.

For these reasons, hotel scores and rankings on Best Hotels in City are not permanent and may be reviewed and updated when necessary.
